I've been seeing fewer comment spam attempts recently, so I'm going to try an experiment. I'll accept comments from unregistered surfers, subject to moderation. If you like, you can also register with TypeKey, in which case your comments will appear right away. Needless to say, if the major comment spam problems return, I'll have to go back to requiring TypeKey registration. Let's hope for the best.
